Hyouge by Parfum Satori is a refined, delicate green fragrance that captures the essence of the Japanese tea ceremony. For this creation, perfumer Satori Osawa drew inspiration from the rich ceremonial culture and aesthetics of matcha that she remembers from her childhood.
Hyouge opens fresh and green, with a distinct matcha note that is slightly bitter, earthy, and sophisticated. Jasmine and violet leaf bring floral softness and depth, while orris butter adds a powdery, almost creamy texture—like the frothy surface of a bowl of freshly whisked matcha. The result is a beautifully balanced fragrance that is complex and elegant, yet never heavy.
The name Hyouge comes from “Hyōge-mono,” a historical nickname for the 16th-century tea master Furuta Oribe. “Hyōge” means “eccentric” or “playful” and reflects Oribe’s bold and innovative style, which left a lasting impact on Japanese art, ceramics, and architecture. With this creation, Osawa brings that free and creative spirit to life.
Satori Osawa: “Today, Japanese green tea is a standard drink even abroad, but for me, tea means a bowl of matcha in a tea ceremony room—the taste of matcha, the scent of tatami mats, the sound of boiling water in the stillness, a touch of light.” Hyouge is her homage to the subtle beauty of this centuries-old tradition.
