A wooden chest of tobacco leaves, left for years at the bottom of the sea. Open it, and the tobacco is still there, only now shaped by salt and time. With Sunken Tobacco, BeauFort London takes a familiar note somewhere entirely its own.
It opens dark and faintly boozy, with blackcurrant, clove and star anise, before a mineral sea breeze of seaweed and ambergris rolls in. Juniper and frankincense add an aromatic, balsamic layer, and then the tobacco slowly surfaces: earthy, woody and gently bitter, carried by vetiver, oakmoss and labdanum.
The honeyed warmth of fermented tobacco is still there, only marked by the sea. Less a sweet tobacco than one with real character: weathered, deep and full of atmosphere.
